Private equity case study examples

PE Simulator editorial teamPublished 12 Oct 2026Last reviewed 12 Oct 2026

Four public situations, used as deal types you can practice. None of these companies is a client, a partner, or an endorsement.

These private equity case study examples are teaching teardowns of four public situations: a growth story, a take-private, a data asset, and a healthcare services deal. They do not report a house model, an entry multiple, or a return. No affiliation or endorsement is implied. Use them to practice the question each deal type forces.

How to read these private equity case study examples

A case page on this site is a way to practice a question, not a research note with a price target. WeWork is the growth story that has to survive unit economics. Arm is the take-private of a strategic asset, and the question of what kind of buyer can own it. Refinitiv is the data asset, where the product is the customer relationship and the archive. Envision Healthcare is healthcare services, where labor and reimbursement sit under the leverage. The names are familiar because they are public. That is the only reason they are here.

No affiliation or endorsement is implied. PE Simulator did not advise these companies, and naming them is not a claim of involvement. If a fact is used, it is a public fact and it stays qualitative. You will not find an entry multiple, an EBITDA figure, or a fund return on these pages. Those numbers, when they exist in filings and press, still do not belong in a practice memo you did not build yourself.

Pick the deal type, then the stage

Read the case, then open the lifecycle stage it stresses. A growth story belongs on the growth plan. A take-private belongs on LBO valuation. A data business belongs on value creation, because the bridge is product and retention, not a factory. A services business under strain belongs on portfolio management, because the hold is where the operating miss shows up. Then use a free tool that matches the judgment: deal screening when the question is pass or kill, the value bridge when the question is which line is real.

After the teardown, build your own numbers on a simulated company. The paper LBO and the screening desk will take assumptions you choose. That is the practice. Reciting a famous outcome is not.
