Refinitiv private equity case study
PE Simulator editorial teamPublished 12 Oct 2026Last reviewed 12 Oct 2026
A teaching teardown of a data asset. Public history only, kept qualitative, with no house view of price or returns.
The Refinitiv private equity case study is a lesson in data assets. Public reporting described a financial-information business separated from its publisher, backed by sponsors, and later combined with an exchange group. The practice question is which value-bridge lines are product and retention, and which are a change of owner. No affiliation or endorsement is implied.

The deal type
Data businesses sell workflow, history, and distribution. Public reporting described Refinitiv as the financial data and terminal business separated from Thomson Reuters, with private equity sponsors involved, and a later combination with London Stock Exchange Group. That sequence is public. The price tags in the press are not your model. This page will not restate them and will not invent a cleaner set.
No affiliation or endorsement is implied. A Refinitiv private equity case study is useful because the value is easy to mislabel. A carve-out creates a standalone cost base. A later sale to a strategic owner can re-rate the asset for reasons that are not operating improvements. The bridge has to keep those apart.
What value creation can honestly claim
Private equity value creation on a data asset shows up in a few places: pricing discipline, product that customers cannot drop, retention, and the cost of standing the business up outside the parent. A combination with a new owner can be a real outcome. It is not, by itself, an operating move you made in year two. Put the operating lines on the bridge first. Put the change of control in the exit path, where it belongs.
Practice on the Value Bridge Builder with four lines you can say out loud: price, retention, standalone cost, and multiple. Delete any line you cannot tie to a growth-plan move. Then read the private equity value creation stage so the same rule sits inside the private equity deal lifecycle.
What to practice
Write a one-page bridge for a simulated data business. Force every operating line to name a customer behavior, not a slogan. If the only way the equity story works is a strategic buyer, say that in the exit section and keep it out of the operating win. That separation is the skill this deal type teaches.
The public combination is context for why buyer universe matters. It is not a return to copy. No affiliation or endorsement is implied.
Data assets tempt a team to call retention a strategy and stop. Name the behavior: who renewed, who expanded, who left after the carve-out. Private equity value creation on this deal type is that list. A multiple change without the list is the transaction, not the operating work.
