Private equity portfolio management
PE Simulator editorial teamPublished 12 Oct 2026Last reviewed 12 Oct 2026
Stage 05 of the private equity deal lifecycle. You check the company against the plan, and the fund against the promise it made to investors.
Private equity portfolio management is how a sponsor runs the hold. You compare the company to the growth plan, the value bridge, and the covenants in the LBO. You also watch the fund: pacing, reserves, and whether this deal still fits the story you told investors. It is the operating middle of the private equity deal cycle.

What private equity portfolio management watches
There are two dashboards, and confusing them is a common miss. The company dashboard asks whether the growth plan is happening. Revenue, margin, cash, the owner of each move, and the risks you wrote down at entry. The fund dashboard asks whether this asset still earns its place: time held, capital still reserved for it, and what the rest of the portfolio needs from this exit. Private equity portfolio management is both. A company that is fine and a fund that is out of time is still a problem.
The review cadence should be boring. Same metrics as the value bridge. Same three moves. A short note on what changed in the market. Teams that invent a new scorecard every quarter cannot tell whether they are improving. The private equity deal lifecycle uses the hold to update the case, not to restart it.
Intervention is part of the job. If a move is late, you either restaff it, shrink it, or take it off the bridge. Leaving it on the slide because it was in the investment memo is how portfolio reviews become fiction. The fund desk has a similar honesty test. If reserves are thin, an add-on that sourcing loves may not be a portfolio decision you can make.
Worked sequence on the Portfolio and Fund Desks
Open the hold at a later year in the simulation, not at closing day. Read the three moves. Mark each one on track, late, or dead. Update the bridge so dead moves are gone. Check debt against the case you signed at LBO valuation. If cash conversion slipped, the sweep you assumed is no longer available, and the equity story has to shrink before you talk about exit.
Then read the fund view. How long has this deal been in the book. What does the exit window need from the company view you just updated. Write one decision: hold and fix a move, or start the exit work. Private equity portfolio management that never makes that decision is just reporting.
What skipped reviews do to the exit
An exit process that starts from the entry memo, instead of from the latest portfolio review, gets Diligence questions it cannot answer. Buyers ask what changed. If the answer is a new slide, they discount the bridge. The private equity deal process expects the hold to leave a trail.
Practice by advancing the same company and forcing an update. Do not open a fresh scenario to avoid a miss. The miss is the lesson. Portfolio management is where practice private equity stops being a model exercise and becomes a management exercise.
End every review with a date and a decision. Hold, fix, or prepare the exit. A dashboard without that sentence is a report the fund cannot act on. Private equity portfolio management earns its place in the private equity deal lifecycle by changing what the next stage is allowed to claim.
